How the CRA Strike Might Affect Businesses This Year

On April 19th, 2023, the Public Service Alliance of Canada declared a general strike that has impacted many important public sectors, most notably the CRA. As a result, bargaining groups representing 159,000 public servants, including the 39,000 represented employees of the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), are on strike as of the time of writing.

The timing of this strike could not be worse for some businesses, as it occurs right before the tax deadline and minimizes the amount of resources and assistance available. And even though the CRA workers are on strike, the tax deadlines for personal, self-employed, and business taxes have not changed. With that said, there will likely be some delays in processing tax returns this season.

Almost all branches of the CRA have been impacted by this strike, and the lack of services directly impacts businesses filing their taxes. The Business Tax Enquiries line has been completely shut down, which means businesses cannot ask questions about GST, payroll, business taxes, and other essential financial matters.

Therefore, businesses must be extra careful filing their taxes this season. Without the usual support from the CRA, businesses may not be adequately prepared for the complexities of business taxes. If you find yourself in this unfavorable position, HWGCA can help.
